Gorgeous Colombian singer, songwriter, dancer, and record producer Shakira is celebrating her 40th birthday today.
Shakira was born on Feb 2, 1977 in Barranquilla. She started her career with first studio albums, Magia and Peligro in the 1990. She entered the English-language market with her fifth album, Laundry Service. Its lead single, "Whenever, Wherever", became the best-selling single of 2002.
Shakira continued her successful career with her albums Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 (2005), the latter of which released one of the best-selling songs of the 21st century, "Hips Don't Lie" which was another hit song of her.  
Shakira’s official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", became the biggest-selling World Cup song of all time with over 1.2 billion views. It is one of the most-watched music videos on YouTube.
The Waka Waka singer has won many awards, including five MTV Video Music Awards, two Grammy Awards, eight Latin Grammy Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, 28 Billboard Latin Music Awards. Shakira has also been Golden Globe-nominated.
Shakira has 2 children with her partner Gerard Pique who is a Spanish footballer.

World War II era singer to release album at age 100

Renowned World War II singer Vera Lynn will celebrate her next birthday by becoming the first singer in history to release a new album at age 100, her record label said on Thursday.

The album is being released on March 17, three days before the singer´s milestone birthday.
"It´s truly humbling that people still enjoy these songs from so many years ago, reliving the emotions of that time," Lynn said in a statement released by Decca Records.
"It´s so wonderful for me to hear ´my songs´ again so beautifully presented in a completely new way," she said.
Known as the "forces´ sweetheart", Lynn famously boosted troops´ morale during World War II, travelling thousands of miles to Egypt, India and Myanmar to entertain soldiers with her songs.
Lynn, who started performing at the age of seven, has won many accolades during her illustrious career.
She became the first British artist to top the US charts in 1952 as well as the oldest living artist to feature in the UK top 20 chart at the age of 97.
Honoured many times by Queen Elizabeth II, Lynn was made a dame in 1975.
Asked on Thursday if she thought her new album could surpass the previous one and reach number one in UK charts, Lynn told BBC radio: "I doubt that."
"It might seem quite tame to these young people, the music. But for us it was very exciting and very meaningful and it meant a lot to people."
The singer, who has described reaching her 100th birthday as "an incredible adventure of song, dance and friendship". It will be celebrated in a charity concert, held at the London Palladium on March 18.
Lynn will not join in the singing, telling the BBC: "It´s best I can remember me as I was."

It shows the correct name of the Indian actor’s father – Saleem Khan, although he goes with an ‘i’ instead of double ‘e’. Regardless, closer inspection reveals that the image has been downloaded from the Internet.


Some Indian media reports believe that it was the work of a prankster, while others say that a voter actually turned up with this card in the Greater Hyderabad Municipality Corporation polls in 2016.
The icon turned 51 last December, and played a wrestler trying to return to game in the film Sultan.

Finally, we have what looks like a promising inside view of the famed inventor Albert Einstein’s life. National Geographic’s new TV series Genius – the first of the channel’s anthology project, is all set for a release in April 2017, and its latest extended trailer was revealed recently.A series on the life of Einstein set for release

Produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, the series’ trailer welcomes the audience to a street where a young boy chases the scientist for an autograph. It then delves into the intellectual’s personal and professional lives, both of which continue simultaneously but have wide, seemingly-irreconcilable gaps.


As is the case with such prodigies  – something very noticeable in Eddie Redmayne’s Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Alan Turing in The Imitation Game – Einstein grapples with the imbalance between his surrealistic, ideal world and the real one, where interaction between people is full of hints, metaphors, sarcasm, and anti-theses.
From a very young age, Einstein – who works as a clerk – is shown to be very rebellious, someone always willing to test out his theories, desiring they be publicised, and secluding himself from the world if he gets focused on something. He also has a stint as a teacher, where a tinge of German is heard in his English.
In an interview to entertainment website Vanity Fair, Howard commented, “[…] Albert’s life story—what his youth was like, who his friends were, who his enemies were, his tumultuous love life—is a story people don’t know.” He believes that people are going to love the effort with “this ambitious and revealing human story behind Einstein’s scientific brilliance.”
Genius’ screenplay is based on Einstein: His Life and Universe, a book by Walter Isaacson, while its cast boosts Academy award-winner Geoffrey Rush, renowned actress Emily Watson, Game of Thrones’ Michael McElhatton, and 33-year-old musician-actor Johnny Flynn.
The first season will treat science nerds to 10 episodes.

Diya Ali, who hails from Sialkot had always dreamt of becoming a princess. “I never knew my dreams will come true,” she says. “We grow up listening to fairy tales, the likes of Snow White and Cindrella. And we want to be princesses too.”
She says the competition was very tough and tasks included spending a night in the jungle.
Diya hopes to break stereotyoes. “I want to excel in everything I do, whether its walking the ramp or acting. I want to show the world how women can excel in their relevant fields,” she says.

PASADENA: Reese Witherspoon, fed up with Hollywood gender bias, is calling for an end to the practice of handing excellent actresses only "thankless roles."
"I've just had enough. Things have to change," Witherspoon said Saturday during a press event in Pasadena, California.
"We have to start seeing women as they really are on film. We have to. And not just in movie theatres on a tiny budget."
The new HBO series "Big Little Lies", in which she stars alongside Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern, is directed by Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallee.
"We need to see real women's experience, whether it involves domestic violence, whether it involves sexual assault, whether it involves motherhood or romance or infidelity or divorce," said Witherspoon, 40.
Hollywood is regularly faulted for failing to give substantial roles to women, especially those older than 35.
In a 2016 report, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) warned that women's place in the American film industry was slipping.
It said women were underrepresented, saw no employment gains in Hollywood compared to their male counterparts, and suffered losses in eight of 11 job arenas examined while struggling in the other three.
The highly anticipated "Big Little Lies," whose script based on Liane Moriarty's eponymous novel was written by David E. Kelley ("Ally McBeal" and "Goliath"), marks Witherspoon's first major role in a TV production. It airs starting February 19.
Witherspoon, winner of an Oscar for her role in Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line," is also a producer. She has focused on films with women in the lead role, such as "Gone Girl."
She recalled having often been the only woman on set for years.
"It’s very rare to find five roles in one piece that we'd all jump at a chance to play," agreed Kidman.

LOS ANGELES: "Hidden Figures," a story about three black women mathematicians who helped NASA put the first men in space, soared into its second week atop the box office, industry estimates for North America showed on Sunday.

The Fox film, a biographical comedy-drama based on a book of the same name, stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae, whose characters must deal with segregation in the 1950s and 1960s workplace.
It brought in $20.5 million in the US and Canada this weekend, according to box-office monitors Exhibitor Relations, and $59.68 million since it premiered four weeks ago.
"La La Land," a nostalgic tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood musicals that just took home eight Golden Globes, rocketed to the number two spot. It took in $14.5 million ($77.08 million overall).
Universal's animated musical "Sing" was in third, with a $13.8 million take over the weekend and an accumulated total of $238.5 million.
The first stand-alone episode in the eight-film "Star Wars" series, "Rogue One" follows the mission of rebel alliance fighters trying to steal plans to the Empire's feared Death Star.
The movie pulled in $13.76 million over the weekend, according to box-office monitor Exhibitor Relations, bringing its four-week total to $502.29 million.
In its first weekend out, "The Bye Bye Man" notched fifth place, taking in $13.38 million. The horror flick is based on a chapter Robert Damon Schneck's book "The President's Vampire."

Oscar-winning ´Exorcist´ author dies at 89

LOS ANGELES: William Peter Blatty, the author of the novel "The Exorcist" and writer of its Oscar-winning big-screen adaptation, has died aged 89, the director of the iconic horror movie announced Friday.

Blatty wrote several boOscar-winning ´Exorcist´ author dies at 89oks but his signature achievement was the 1971 novel that told the story of a 12-year-old girl whose vile behavior leads a young priest to conclude that she is possessed by a demon.
The novel was panned by critics but went on to sell 13 million copies, topping The New York Times bestseller list for 17 weeks, and is retrospectively considered to be one of the greatest horror novels of all time.
Blatty won an Oscar for his screenplay of his own book for the 1973 film and later wrote and directed a sequel, 1990´s "The Exorcist III."
The original film, directed by William Friedkin and starring Linda Blair, was a box-office hit and cult sensation and inspired a generation of horror filmmakers.
Blatty, raised a devout Roman Catholic, died at a hospital near his home in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, but it was announced on social media by Friedkin on Friday.
"William Peter Blatty, dear friend and brother who created ´The Exorcist´ passed away yesterday," he said, prompting a torrent of tributes from the horror-writing community.
"RIP William Peter Blatty, who wrote the great horror novel of our time. So long, Old Bill," tweeted Stephen King, whose books have sold more than 350 million copies.
The son of Lebanese immigrants, Blatty was born into poverty in New York and graduated from Georgetown University before earning his living as a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman.
During a diverse career he was also a psychological warfare specialist in the US Air Force and a public relations director at Loyola University of Los Angeles and the University of Southern California.
Although best-known for "The Exorcist," Blatty specialized in comedy, penning "Promise Her Anything" (1965), which starred Warren Beatty, "What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?" (1966) and "The Great Bank Robbery" (1969).
He collaborated several times with director Blake Edwards, co-writing the Pink Panther sequel "A Shot in the Dark" (1964) and "Darling Lili" (1970) which starred screen legends Rock Hudson and Julie Andrews.
"You might only know Blatty from ´The Exorcist,´ but his array of talents could practically make your head spin. He will be missed," said film blog Screen Crush.
"Rest in peace William Peter Blatty, writer of both the peerless horror ´The Exorcist´ AND the funniest Clouseau film, ´A Shot In The Dark,´" added Edgar Wright, the British director of hit zom-com "Shaun of the Dead."
He is survived by his wife, Julie Alicia Witbrodt, who told The Washington Post her husband was suffering from multiple myeloma, a form of cancer.

KARACHI: The Young Performers Theatre and Music festival by the National Academy of Performing Arts is geared to promote young and budding talent. A first of its kind initiative, the ten-day affair features mostly debutant directors presenting 12 different plays in front of a wider audience with venue and facilities provided by the Academy. A reasonably diverse line up with productions ranging from serious to comic the series includes adaptations of foreign plays in Urdu as well as a few original scripts.

The young director’s event opened with Urdu adaptation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ by Vijdaan Shah who is a recent NAPA graduate. The budding thespian talking about his directorial debut on stage with the historical tragedy describes it as a challenge and huge undertaking due to its five act structure. A complex story of love, war, defeat, betrayal and politics the 17th century play is still very relevant says Shah.
In keeping with the tradition of promoting new talent the series is another effort to keep theatre growing according to NAPA’s Artistic Director Zain Ahmed. A platform for aspiring artists to showcase their work the ten-day festival also marks the opening of their newly renovated basement auditorium says Ahmed. Out of the 10 days, the last two will be dedicated to musical performances, concludes Ahmed who is also the festival director.
Titled Young Performers Theatre and Music Series, the event starting from January 13 will continue till 22nd.

David Bowie nominated for Brit Awards

LONDON:  David Bowie could be in line to receive two posthumous Brit Awards after being shortlisted Saturday for next month´s ceremony.David Bowie nominated for Brit Awards

Bowie, who died on January 10 last year, was nominated for best British male solo artist alongside Craig David, Skepta and Michael Kiwanuka.
He was also shortlisted in the British album of the year category for "Blackstar", released on his 69th birthday -- two days before he died.
The other nominees are grime artist Skepta for "Konnichiwa" -- which won the Mercury Prize for best British album -- The 1975´s "I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So
Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It", Kano´s "Made In The Manor" and Kiwanuka for "Love and Hate". Britain´s top music awards ceremony takes place at the O2 Arena in London on February 22, hosted by Canadian crooner Michael Buble.
Bowie won the best British male solo artist award in 2014 and in his acceptance speech, read in his absence by supermodel Kate Moss, he urged Scotland to stay in the United Kingdom.
Ellie Goulding, Emeli Sande, Anonhni, Lianne La Havas and Nao were nominated in the 2017 best British female solo artist category. Radiohead are up for the best British group award, where they face Little Mix, The 1975, Bastille and Biffy Clyro.
The best international group nominees are Drake and Future, Kings of Leon, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, A Tribe Called Quest and Twenty One Pilots.
The five shortlisted for best international male solo artist were Bon Iver, Bruno Mars, Drake, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd.
The international female solo artist award sees a sibling rivalry between Beyonce and Solange, who are also competing with Christine And The Queens, Rihanna and Sia.

Ringling Bros. circus folds its tent after nearly 150 years

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus said on Saturday it will cease performances after 146 years in business, owing to what it said were declining tickets sales and high operating costs.

"After much evaluation and deliberation, my family and I have made the difficult business decision that Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey will hold its final performances in May," Kenneth Feld, chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment, the Florida-based producer of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, said on the circus' web site.In May of last year, the circus retired its elephant act, years after a suit by activists. It admitted no wrongdoing, but agreed to a six-figure fine several years before ending the elephant performances.
In his statement on Saturday, Feld noted that declining sales had fallen off even more dramatically following what he called "the transition of the elephants off the road."
Animal rights group PETA said it "heralds the end of what has been the saddest show on earth for wild animals, and asks all other animal circuses to follow suit, as this is a sign of changing times."
PETA President Ingrid Newkirk also said in its statement that 36 years of PETA protests had "awoken the world to the plight of animals in captivity."
Activists often appeared outside venues with fliers, protesting against the use of elephants, and pictures of animals they said were abused.
After Feld Entertainment sued, claiming malicious prosecution, more than a dozen animal welfare groups agreed in 2012 and 2014 to pay settlements totaling about $25 million to end 14 years of litigation.
The circus went by the slogan "The greatest show on earth," a catchphrase that was so ubiquitous it was employed for the title of the 1952 Cecil B. DeMille best picture Oscar-winning film starring Charlton Heston and Betty Hutton.
The circus will end it long run with performances in Providence, R.I., on May 7, 2017, and in Uniondale, N.Y., on May 21. Other Feld productions, including Marvel Universe LIVE!, Monster Jam, Monster Energy Supercross, AMSOIL Arenacross, Disney On Ice and Disney Live!, will continue, and the company said it will continue to develop new shows.

The half-brother of Prince Harry’s girlfriend and Suits star Meghan Markle was arrested and charged after he allegedly held a gun to his girlfriend’s head following a drunken argument, The Mail on Sunday reported.
Thomas Markle Jr, 50, was arrested late Thursday after a drunken row with his girlfriend Darlene Blount, in Grants Pass, Oregon. He was charged with menacing, pointing a firearm at another person, and unlawful use of a weapon, according to police records.
Meghan, best known for her role as Rachel Zane on legal drama Suits, has been dating Prince Harry for several months. In November last year, the Kensington Palace confirmed Meghan was "a few months" into a relationship with the prince, as the prince asked for the media harassment of his girlfriend and her family to end.
